In Namibia, about half of the country’s rural population lacks access to electricity, making daily life and economic activities challenging. Rural areas are spread over long distances, and the cost of grid extension is prohibitively high, with some settlements too small to justify the investment. In response, the government of Namibia, through its Ministry of Mines and Energy, has established off-grid communities equipped with solar photovoltaic (PV)-battery-diesel generator power systems, also known as mini-grids. To further enhance the sustainability of these mini-grids, the German-Namibian collaborative project PROCEED (Pathway to Renewable Off-Grid Community Energy for Development) was initiated. The project explored ways to improve the operation and performance of existing mini-grids, establishing a reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy supply in Namibia’s rural communities. Ultimately, this will improve living conditions and foster local economic growth while contributing to the country’s renewable energy goals.
The lecture event will take place in presence at the THI, Campus Ingolstadt, room G215 (site plan) as well as in parallel with online transmission.
